A study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition found that a low-fat vegan diet successfully improved several health markers compared to the Mediterranean diet, which is partially plant-based, but includes seafood, meat, eggs and dairy products. 
In the 16-week randomized crossover trial with 62 overweight adults, participants on the 100% plant-based diet lost an average 6 kilograms of body weight, considerably reduced cholesterol levels, and improved insulin sensitivity, while there were no significant changes in these measurements for those on the Mediterranean diet. 
Study author Dr. Hana Kahleova, Director of Clinical Research at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, stated that choosing plant-based eating is a great way to lose weight and get healthy.
