Bodhidharma was born in the 4th century in the southern India. He was the third son of a Brahman king; he forsook his princehood early on to become a monk. Bodhidharma attained enlightenment at a very young age and became the 28th Master in the Buddhist lineage. He was sent to China by his Master around 524 AD to transmit the Mahayana teaching and help people reach enlightenment within one life, so he was also known as the first Patriarch of Chan Buddhism in China.
