A recently held public consultation by the European Commission revealed that 72% of European Union (EU) citizens want Union funding for plant-based milk alternatives in school canteens. An on-line petition garnered tens of thousands of signatures, further demonstrating support for the measure, which was also backed by non-governmental organizations, ProVeg International and Compassion in World Farming. Reasons cited for funding plant-based dairy alternatives include: allergies, lactose intolerance, sustainability, and animal-people welfare. Compared to a liter of soy milk, one liter of cow-people’s milk generates three times the amount of greenhouse gases and requires 22 times more water. Jasmijn de Boo (vegan), vice president of ProVeg noted, “Plant-based milks fortified with calcium are sustainable and healthy options that should be included in the school scheme as European society shifts towards a more plant-based diet.”
Yes, European Union! We applaud giving your school children healthy and compassionate plant-based milk options for a brighter future, in Heaven’s uplifting grace.
