I hope you’ve been getting plenty of exercise and staying fit and healthy this year. I have an exercise tip for us all. Did you know that doing a specific sitting exercise in your chair may decrease your blood sugar and possibly prevent type 2 diabetes? According to professor Marc Hamilton, from the University of Houston’s Health and Human Performance department, performing special contractions of your lower leg, called Soleus Press-up (SPU), can enhance your metabolic health. With your body relaxed, sit in a chair with your feet positioned flat on the ground. Next, elevate your heels to their full range of motion and then let your heels come back to the floor and repeat at a timing of around one per second. Perform this exercise when seated throughout the day for as long as possible. Professor Hamilton's experiments averaged 270 minutes (or around 4.5 hours) of accumulated SPUs per day and indicated that people can reduce their blood glucose by approximately 52% with this method. The study also demonstrated that the exercise lowered the amount of insulin secreted by the pancreas by 60%, which was even more effective than walking. Who knew that simply taking a seat can be healthy?
You can try holding back your laughter when you hear the following joke. Let’s see if you succeed! This one’s entitled “Aromatic Diet.”
Two girls are talking about their friend Sue and her new diet.
“Have you seen Sue? She has been on a garlic diet for weeks. Do you think it works?”
“The garlic diet doesn’t seem to work, but since everyone has to keep their distance from her, she looks great.”
