In today’s show, we are honored to hear from Dr. Hsieh Chia-Ming, a breast cancer surgeon, Taiwan Adventist Hospital’s Cancer Care Committee’s chief executive officer, and the former director of the hospital’s breast surgery department. He will share with us his perspectives on the relationship between a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and breast cancer prevention as well as about his hospital’s compassionate care for breast cancer patients. Breast cancer is a condition where a malignant tumor has developed from cells in the breast. “Breast cancer occurs most generally around the age of 40 to 69 or 70. It is lucky if the disease is diagnosed and treated in the early stages so that she still could keep her roles in the family and workplace. It is not only helpful to her health, but also mental sustenance for her. So, it is necessary to have regular check-ups. The most important point is to never let the disease happen in the first place. Therefore, a proper diet, a vegetable and fruit-based diet, and regular exercise, may be the most fundamental and better way to prevent diseases.” Dr. Hsieh discussed with us the research findings of Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Scientists concluded that women who consume high amounts of fruits and vegetables each day have a lesser chance of having breast cancer. “It was led by America’s Harvard University. Thirty years ago, they began tracing the relationship between the breast cancer risk and intake of vegetables and fruits – that is, if your intake of vegetables and fruits is high, then your breast cancer risk will be lower. In fact, according to our long-term follow-up tracing, it is really beneficial to have a correct diet and proper exercise. These can activate the immune cells in our body to fight the cancer cells. They can suppress the cancer.” We appreciate Dr. Hsieh Chia-Ming's sharing of his medical expertise about breast cancer and how his hospital is supporting those with the condition.
