One of the reasons October 2nd was specifically selected as “World Farm Animals Day” is that it coincides with the birthday of one of the modern era’s greatest practitioners of nonviolence, Mahatma Gandhi - the “Father of India.” Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated,” and, “I hold that the more helpless a creature, the more entitled it is to protection by man from the cruelty of man.” As we take this opportunity to contemplate the meaning of World Farm Animals Day, we call on humanity to be aware that all beings should live as equals and be treated with respect.
