Eckhart von Hochheim, widely known as Meister Eckhart, was a German theologian, philosopher, and mystic who lived in the late 13th and early 14th centuries. While respected as an accomplished academic theologian, Meister Eckhart was exceptionally remembered for his boldly expressed sermons. At the time, people in Europe were experiencing turmoil of different kinds, including famine and plagues. This led many to turn inward to spirituality and mystical experience. They listened to Meister Eckhart’s sermons with great interest, especially as his main theme was the holiness of the individual soul and its oneness with God.
