An initiative by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), the European Union (EU) and the Lviv City Council aims to renovate public buildings to house internally displaced persons (IDPs). The initiative will utilize €25 million from the IFC to provide grants to upgrade facilities for the pilot project that will also create jobs and boost the economy. As of September 2022, almost 245,000 IDPs have taken shelter in Lviv. The housing program seeks to increase the city’s capacity and quality of lodging with special consideration given to distances to public services. The European Union is a recipient of four Shining World Leadership Awards for Humanitarianism, two Shining World Leadership Awards for Peace, and a Shining World Leadership Award for Earth Protection; as well as a laureate of two Shining World Leadership Awards for Humanitarianism, and Shining World Leadership Awards for Compassion, Unconditional World Care and True Caring. California, USA, drought leaves farms and homes without water.
The state of California has experienced the driest three years on record, which has led to nearly 215,000 hectares of farmland being left unplanted. This year, 1,200 wells went dry, which is a 50% increase over last year. By contrast, less than 100 per year were depleted between 2018 and 2020. The worst affected region is the San Joaquin Valley, where much of the state’s agricultural land is located. It produces nuts, vegetables, and fruits that are exported globally. The situation has been caused by a typically dry La Niña weather pattern and exacerbated by human-induced climate change. Such saddening news, California, on the loss of your crops and the difficulties facing your state. Ethiopia and Somalia pledge to enhance political, economic and social relations.
During a recent official state visit to the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa by the Somali president, His Excellency Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, a number of issues were discussed with the Ethiopian prime minister, His Excellency Abiy Ahmed, a Shining World Leadership Award for Peace laureate. The leaders affirmed the two nations’ historical ties and intent to bolster their bilateral cooperation based on respecting the sovereignty of each other. Specific issues such as exchanging intelligence between the nations’ security agencies were also discussed. Their Excellencies hope to bring peace and prosperity to the Horn of Africa region and to work together to address common challenges for both nations. Somalia is a Shining World Leadership Award for Peace laureate. Our congratulations, President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, on further developing the friendship between Somalia and Ethiopia. French non-governmental organization Plastic Odyssey to help countries reduce marine plastic debris.
Based in Marseille, France, the Plastic Odyssey ship has embarked on a three-year global expedition to propagate various methods of sustainable plastic waste management. The focus will be on the 30 countries in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America most affected by plastic pollution. According to the United Nations Environment Programme, about 11 million metric tons of plastic ends up in the ocean each year, increasingly harming marine life. The Plastic Odyssey emphasizes the importance of preventing the material from ever reaching the ocean. Its education agenda includes teaching 300 entrepreneurs, 10 in each nation, how to repurpose plastic into useful items like pipes or paving material. What a wonderful initiative, Plastic Odyssey. Indonesian couple open home to people with mental health challenges.
Heru Setyawan and Lamini, a couple from Paringan village in East Java, Indonesia, have been taking care of people with mental illnesses for 15 years. They shelter them in their house and help their guests to live a normal life. The pair have named their place Margo Widodo, which means path to goodness in the Javanese language. It can accommodate up to 12 residents at a time and hundreds of people have been aided over the years. The couple do not charge for their services and most families of the residents provide a small amount to assist with expenses. However, at times, the couple use their own savings to fund operations. In recognition of Mr. Setyawan’s efforts, he received a certificate of appreciation from the Governor of East Java. Beyond Meat brings vegan burger and sausage items to another major UK supermarket chain.
US-headquartered vegan food company Beyond Meat has recently started selling its plant-based Beyond Burger and Beyond Sausage at the UK grocery chain Morrisons, while other leading food retailers in Britain, namely Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Waitrose already carry the two popular products. Last year, the company entered 450 new stores in the UK. The producer believes it can offer meat alternatives to the 46% of British adults who say they endeavor to decrease their animal-people product intake. Beyond Meat was found in 2009 and by June 2022 its brand was present in 183,000 retail stores and food service centers in over 90 countries. Kudos, Beyond Meat and all collaborators, for making plant-based options more accessible to people worldwide. New species of sloth-person identified in Brazil.
Researchers have confirmed that maned sloths, whose head looks like a coconut, are actually two separate species, not one as previously believed. They are found in a small belt of the northern and southern parts of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The southern Brazil maned sloth-folk are found in Rio de Janeiro and Espírito Santo states, while the northern ones are located in Bahia state. The southern sloth-people have rounder jaws, wider cheekbones and flatter skulls than those from the north. Substantial genetic divergence was also detected between the two groups, which experts estimate took place about 4.24 million years ago. The researchers commented that both sloth species are likely to be considered endangered due to deforestation and habitat fragmentation. Our appreciation, involved scientists, for revealing the discovery of a new species of sloth-individuals in Brazil. Master was King Sejong the Great (vegetarian), a sage King depicted on the 10,000 won Korean banknote and one of the most respected kings by Koreans. He made a law that gave people 100 days of vacation after having a child. And He also made another one that provided free food and clothes to the elderly over the age of 100. Even during His time, people already praised Him as Haedong YoSoon, comparing Him to the sage Kings Yao and Shun of ancient China.
Among the numerous achievements of Sejong the Great, the creation of Hangeul is considered one of the greatest. Today, Hangeul is regarded as one of the best writing systems in the world due to its creative and scientific principles and forms which are easy to learn and write. I would like to dedicate my poem to Beloved Master. When I was a ninth grader in middle school, 41 years ago, it won a prize under the theme of “Sejong the Great,” at the National Student Writing Contest to commemorate His Birthday. I hope my humble writing will be of some comfort to Dearest Master, who works day and night to save sentient beings at this time of the world fluctuating with sufferings due to the karma of humanity’s meat-eating. I pray Master will always be at peace and that Master’s wish for a vegan world will come true soon.
